Tipping the Scales, features three Asian-inspired California mavericks: Lou Harrison, John Cage and Harry Partch. Like Messiaen, they found fantastic ways to give mid-century music new sensual energy – an iridescent Javanese Gamelan with Western instrumental soloists, a Zen-inspired quartet, and the whimsical power of cloud chamber bowls, alongside mega-harps and a bass marimba inspired by ancient Greek and Chinese tuning. This 15-member Gamelan plays two sets of instruments with different scales. Santa Monica resident John Cage’s meditative quartet was intended to”sober and quiet the mind.” The 7-member ensemble Partch plays one of only two sets of instruments designed by the eccentric composer.
