Liszt is like an iceberg with only the most glittering music getting
attention while a large and profound body of work remains largely
submerged. A famous and a largely unknown tone poem performed in
his two-piano transcriptions are separated by songs that inspired
Wagner to steal. Finally, a rare pinnacle of religious drama will
be performed on this night between Good Friday and Easter. Via
Crucis contains Liszt's most advanced harmonic language and exquisite vocal
writing.
Johann Wolfgang Goethe: "Knowest thou the land where
the lemon trees bloom, where in dark groves golden oranges gleam...".
Choral texts: Jacopone da Todi, Venantius Fortunatus, Paul Gerhardt & Johann
