In many ways Gubaidulina is the spiritual successor to Messiaen. His musical
manifestation of Catholicism was as catholic in its sources of inspiration
as can be imagined — Hindu talas, exotic birds, and Peruvian myth, for
starters. Her post-Soviet Russian Orthodoxy was tempered by Asian folk music
in a largely Muslim town with an Imam in her family tree. While Dieu Parmi
Nous marks the ecstatic conclusion to his first major cycle, the
Meditations come from Messiaen's most profound organ cycle and a
late turning point. With Light & Darkness Gubaidulina took the
mantle of solo organ music. Risonanza, with its 3 trumpets, 4 trombones,
and string sextet, integrates the organ with an unusual ensemble to achieve
spectacular results. |
