The ultra-futuristic 1939 New York World’s Fair was Villa-Lobos’ first introduction to North America. It is a fitting symbol of the Brazilian’s desire for popularity even as the leader of his country’s avant-garde. Piazolla’s compelling view of Buenos Aires street life anticipates the drama and genre crossing of Golijov, the Argentine tango innovator’s most important student.
Other music of Golijov and the Americas can be heard in Walt Disney Concert Hall April 22- May 4. |
