Licorice is slang for clarinet and rosin is what makes strings speak. A cavalcade of British music from the last quarter of the last century features three clarinets, three violas, and three cellos. These daring feats of genius taunt and charm music’s farther reaches – bracing, funny, wistful, strange – sometimes aided and abetted by wild piano and percussion tricks and licks.
